About Tyron

Invented in Britain.
Proven by its armed forces.
Fitted across Asia.

Tyron has made wheels keep turning after a tyre fails since 1977. What began as a request from the British Ministry of Defence now protects ambulances, police vehicles, armoured 4×4s and family cars on four continents.

Origins

The Ministry of Defence had a problem. A flat tyre was ending patrols.

The Safety Band was invented in 1977. Two years later Tyron UK was founded to build it, and the UK Ministry of Defence became its first demanding customer.

The Ministry asked for a system that would reduce blowout risk and keep a vehicle controllable even under riot conditions. Tyron answered with steel bands for Land Rover wheels, and a design philosophy that has not changed since: hold the tyre on the rim mechanically, so the driver keeps steering and brakes when the air is gone.

Every product since, from the patented Multiband to the lightest rubber run-flat in the world, follows the same idea.

United Kingdom · 1977 to today

Four decades of engineering, one idea

Tyron continues to develop run-flat technology for civilian and military wheel safety, supported by a worldwide sales and service network.

  1. 1977
    Origin

    The Safety Band is invented

An aluminium wheel paired with an aluminium band. For the first time a flat tyre could be held on the rim mechanically rather than by air pressure alone.

  2. 1979
    Company

    Tyron UK is founded

The company is formed to bring the Safety Band to market, serving military, government and safety vehicles. The date the Tyron name has carried ever since.

  3. Early 1980s
    Defence

Steel bands for the British MoD

At the request of the UK Ministry of Defence, Tyron develops steel bands for Land Rover steel wheels. Far stronger than aluminium, and they end the galvanic reaction that had welded aluminium bands to steel rims and made tyre changes impossible.

  4. 2002
    Multiband

    The Multiband is patented

A redesigned, height-adjustable band to suit the changing shape of wheel wells. Its plug-in feet grip the wheel, improving handling and outperforming every other safety band design. This is the product fitted to cars, vans and ambulances across Asia today.

  5. 2008
    ATR-MP

    World’s first multi-piece rubber run-flat

The All Terrain Rubber ATR-MP fits military split rims with no special tools or hydraulic presses. Run-flat range of up to 150 km, far beyond the Finabel standard.

  6. 2009
    R4

    The R4 wheel

A super-strong alloy wheel for armoured 4×4 and cash-in-transit vehicles, 1,600 kg load rating, with an ingenious beadlock. Paired with the ATR-MP it travels over 50 km on four flat tyres, on or off road.

  7. 2013
    Partnership

    Complete wheel assemblies

Partnership with Global Wheels of South Africa: military customers can now buy finished wheel assemblies with Michelin, Pirelli or Continental tyres from one source.

  8. 2017
    ATR-MP

    Carbon-fibre spine

Development begins on a carbon-fibre inner spine for the ATR-MP, cutting its weight by over 40% and making it the lightest rubber run-flat in the world.

  9. 2018
    Manufacturing

    ATR-Beadlock and a new factory

A rubber beadlock that guarantees clamping force on the tyre regardless of make. The same year, Tyron Rubber Co. Ltd moves into a new factory in Thailand running 24/7.

  10. 2019
    Range

    ATR-SP, ATR-Custom and the 18″ R4

    The ATR-SP low-cost single-piece run-flat, the ATR-Custom for single-piece wheels, and an 18-inch bolt-together R4 alloy with a 1,900 kg load rating.
